SC rejects PTI’s petition for suspending changes in NAB law

The SC also issued notices to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the federal government to submit their replies in the case. A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Umar Ata Bandial, heard the petition.

Rejecting the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) petition, seeking suspension of the amendments made recently to the NAB law, the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday refused to grant a ‘stay’.

The SC also issued notices to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the federal government to submit their replies in the case. A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Umar Ata Bandial, heard the petition. CJP Bandial, in his remarks, said such matters should be settled in the parliament. “The court can interfere in the parliament’s matters only after lot of thinking and calculation,” he added. “I will also advise the PTI to participate in debates on such bills,” he said, and asked PTI’s Shah Mehmood Qureshi as to why he and his party men were not in the parliament when these amendments were being passed.

“Only President Arif Alvi had condemned the passage of these amendments,” the CJP remarked. “For God’s sake, think about the country. One of the country’s largest political parties was not there in the House at the time of passage of these bills and now it complains that these amendments were unconstitutional,” he wondered.
